Women to Women Day 3

Our team of 7 women are spending 11 days in Ethiopia, ministering to widows, teen girls and the children in our orphanages.

It is Sunday morning in Ethiopia. The team will be 'having church' with the teen girls at the hotel - sharing in worship, Scripture and prayer. I wish I could hear the songs they'll be singing to the Lord - some very familiar to us and some in Amharic. But one God who delights to hear praise lifted from grateful hearts!

After lunch at the hotel, the team returns to the YWAM Children's Home. Abdissa has a very vital ministry to the widows and orphans in the community near his home and our team will get to visit some of these women and children. Below are some pictures taken in one of the widows' homes we visited last year. You can see that our team will be in some pretty primitive conditions - which are the daily reality for millions of people! It's a humbling, unforgettable experience to be served coffee by a woman who can barely feed her family but who is so grateful to God for the help she's receiving through the ministry.

In the afternoon, our team of seven, accompanied by Abebe, will take a 2 hour van ride to the town of Adama (also known as Nazret) which is southeast of the capitol city. It's supposed to be about 84 degrees and cloudy today in Adama - they are in the middle of the rainy season in Ethiopia. A typical scene in Adama:

Tezera Kebede runs our Orphans & Widows' Home in this bustling town, where horse carts and livestock share the road with cars and vans. Tezera and her husband had it on their hearts to provide a home for the marginalized widows and orphans in Adama. With God's vision and YWAM's support, their dream has become a reality!

The team will have dinner tonight at the 'German Hotel' in Adama, where they'll stay for Sunday and Monday night. Keep them in your prayers! I promise if I hear anything from any of them, I will post it ASAP! If you hear anything, will you let me know?

Day 2 in Ethiopia

Our team of 7 women are spending 11 days in Ethiopia, ministering to widows, teen girls and the children in our orphanages.

I hope you'll all bear with me as I attempt to give you a pretty good idea of what our Women to Women team is up to each day of their trip, keeping in mind that I'm generally doing this without any direct communication with the team itself!! I'll give you a summary of what's on their itinerary for the day, filling in with commentary and pictures I might have that 'illustrate' the locations and scenes they're possibly visiting. (When they come home, they'll probably read this and say, "We never did that!" or "Which trip is she talking about? Certainly not ours!" So I apologize in advance!

As I type this, it is 4:40 am on Saturday in Ethiopia. The team is (prayerfully) sound asleep, soon to be awakened by the Muslim call to prayer that is broadcast over the loudspeaker system throughout the city at around 5:00 each morning. That will be followed by the bells at the Catholic church where they're staying at about 6:00 am. It's different than waking up to your local Christian radio station, or even the buzzer on your alarm clock! It's an immediate reminder that you're not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy!

Today will be dedicated to the teenaged girls at YWAM's Children's Home. After breakfast at the Guest House - where Abebe's wife, Abonesh, and their oldest daughter, Nardos, will join the team - they'll plan and pray for their special time with those young women. All of these girls have been rescued by Abdissa from life on the streets of Addis Ababa. None have had a mother or father in the picture in the recent past and most have been subject to the effects of extreme poverty. At YWAM, they've been provided with tuition to attend school, food and clothing, safety and, most importantly, each has made Christ the Lord of their lives.

The whole group will spend the day focused on making these young women feel loved, encouraged and very special. I think there might be some shopping in the works, possibly some hair and nail make-overs, sharing of testimonies, meals, gifts, prayer times and lots of laughter. Can you imagine how fun it will be for both groups? They'll be staying at the Damu Hotel in Addis, one of the nicer hotels in the city.

Lord, give this wonderful group of women an absolutely awesome time together! Break down any walls due to cultural differences and bind them together as sisters. Mend broken hearts. Give them a freedom to be themselves and receive from each other out of Your love and goodness. Thank You for making such a retreat possible and do exceedingly, abundantly beyond all that they're able to imagine!

Safe Arrival

Our team of 7 women are spending 11 days in Ethiopia, ministering to widows, teen girls and the children in our orphanages. (Pictures below were not taken on this trip but are from a trip I went on last year.)

We had an email from Abebe, our wonderful in-country representative, who said he met 6 of the team at the airport last night (it's already Friday in Ethiopia as I write this!) and this morning met Carolyn, who flew separately. They spent the night in Addis Ababa at the Catholic Guest House which has dorm-like rooms of two beds, a bathroom with toilet and shower and a sitting area. Meals are provided downstairs in the dining room and are prepared and served by a very sweet group of nuns, who also clean and do laundry. These women don't speak English so there's lots of smiling and patting of backs to say 'thanks.'

I'm imagining that for breakfast they had rolls, some sort of fresh fruit (papaya, banana or melon), perhaps an egg and always dark, strong coffee! Meal times here are great times to talk about the day, pray, plan and share how everyone is doing. Liane will be sure there's lots of laughter!

Abebe's wife, Abonesh, will join the team and will accompany them on much of their travels and ministry. On the schedule for today is a visit to the Fistula Hospital, which you can read more about here and here. (And if you haven't already seen it, please rent the dvd "A Walk To Beautiful" to see a wonderful telling of the history and ongoing work of this ministry.)

In the afternoon, the team plans to visit the YWAM Children's Home, where Abdissa is 'father' to over twenty children who he has rescued from life on the streets or without hope. These kids know Adoption Ministry's teams well and so look forward to our visits. There will be squeals and hugs - even the girls who've never been there won't be strangers for long! The team may also visit some of the children who are living in the community in Addis who Abdissa knows and ministers to. For dinner, they'll take the teen girls with them back to the Guest House for dinner and a fun evening together.

There is a lot to take in when you arrive in Ethiopia for the first time. There are thousands of people on the streets, many begging or desperately trying to sell their wares to provide food for their families. Let's pray for physical strength today as the women adjust to a new time zone, for direction and unity as the team begins their time of ministry and for God to show Himself in each of their lives as they pour them out to so many in need of His touch.

Lovely Feet!

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news - the good news of peace and salvation; the news that the God of Israel reigns! Isaiah 52:7

Our 2009 Women to Women Team is on their way to Ethiopia! Last night we had a wonderful prayer send-off where parents, family and friends gathered at the YWAM Adoption Ministry house in Puyallup to pray over each team member and ask God to go before them, preparing the way for a wonderful 12 days of ministry and adventure!

Traveling together will be: Liane, Joan, Kim, Katie, Amanda, Carolyn and Lisa.

Each team member took one personal suitcase and one (gigantic) suitcase filled right to the 50 lb capacity with clothing, formula, craft supplies, diapers, vitamins and gifts for the children in our orphanages. In addition, enough money was raised to provide two widows in Adama with cataract surgery, giving them recovery of their sight!

Our team will fly to Washington D.C. and on to Addis Ababa (via a one hour fuel stopever in Rome), arriving at 7 pm on July 9th. (Ethiopia is 10 hours ahead of Pacific time here.) Please pray for safe travels, calm spirits, team unity and God's leading in all they do. I will be updating the blog with more details about their itinerary in the days to come. We don't anticipate a lot of communication from the women, as the internet is sketchy at best in Ethiopia, but anything I hear, I will pass along in the blog!

(You can read a few more details about the trip here.)

About Us

Adoption Ministry of YWAM Ethiopia is a Christian missionary organization called to help meet the needs of widows, children and at-risk families in Ethiopia.  Through a variety of ways, we seek to minister to those in Ethiopia who are without hope.

The ministry began in 2007 when our ministry director, Joy Casey, was visiting Ethiopia and God began stirring in her heart His desire to bring hope to the marginalized women and children in that beautiful country.

Today we are an official NGO (non-governmental organization) working to support women and children in the community who are without hope.
